Former Midlander looks forward to publication of first novel
By Marie Tyler MRT Correspondent
Former Midlander Eric Luck expects to become a first-time author next month with the release of “Most Fortunate Son.” Set in Fort Worth, the book centers around Jerry Wilson, a private investigator who is called into suspicion following a client¹s murder. While trying to solve the crime, he must not only protect his family, but also come to the aid of a longtime friend, Dr. Bodie Kohler, who seeks the answers to his son¹s death in Vietnam 37 years earlier. Though Luck “was a hair-young to go” to Vietnam, he was influenced by the men his age and older who did fight. ”They influenced my view that Vietnam vets are not wild-eyed crazy people,” said Luck in a phone interview. “I saw ‘Deer Hunter’ and ‘Born onthe Fourth of July’ and those vets are represented as extremely impacted by the war. The Vietnam vets I know went on to make success of their lives.” Because he felt this view was underrepresented, his book includes two successful Vietnam veterans, ³because the guys I know are solid guys and did make a life for themselves,” he said. Luck was born in Midland in 1954, where he lived with his family for about 11 years. After graduating from Texas Christian University he pursued a career in oil and gas. “I was in the oil and gas business for 30 years,” said Luck. “The roots began when I was watching my dad in Midland.” Now living in Dallas, Luck hopes to visit Midland for a signing when the book is released the end of March. “I would love to come back to Midland,” said Luck. “My stepmom still lives there.” The book will be published through Publish America, based out of Frederick, Md. Though the publisher has received some heat online for its print-on-demand style, Luck said he has been very pleased with the experience. “They give a lot of first-time authors a shot. It has been a good relationship with them.” After a year on and off of writing, Luck submitted his book via e-mail in late 2004. He waited for a few months before he e-mailed them again, at which point they requested he resubmit the manuscript. Two weeks later he was informed PA was interested in his book, and he signed a publishing contract. Then commenced the process of editing his work. ³For months it was back and forth,² Luck said. “Editing is not as fun as writing. The writing process was a blast; the publishing part - not so much,” said Luck, jokingly. “After I have read it for the 15th time, I suddenly don¹t think it¹s as good as I used to.” But he said he enjoyed learning the process of submission and publishing. “I would say the (writing) process was very character-driven for me. There is no doubt there are people who definitely inspired the characters, but it is fiction,” Luck said. ”There is no doubt my parents are in there,² said Luck. ³I had some of the characters for a long time.” After over two years of work, Luck looks forward to the upcoming release. “We are done with editing and it has moved from production to cover design.”

Impressive Writing Debut Released “Most Fortunate Son” by Eric Luck
February 10, 2006, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas - “Most Fortunate Son”, a mystery/suspense novel by talented new author Eric Luck, will be released by PublishAmerica to bookstore shelves on March 27, 2006.
“Most Fortunate Son” is the story of Jerry Wilson, a private investigator in Ft. Worth, Texas who encounters the misfortune of having a wealthy woman client turn up dead. The police calculatedly work their way through suspects, but they start with Jerry. Jerry believes his client’s cheating husband killed his own wife. He gets faster action than the police by investigating the cheating husband himself.
While working on that murder case, Jerry’s partner asks Jerry to find out the truth about how his partner’s oldest son was killed in Vietnam – 37 years ago. This will require Jerry to interview survivors of one of the most intense battles of the Vietnam War, all of who witnessed significant brutalities besides the death of James Kohler in 1968. None are interested in revisiting those memories. Maybe the only way to achieve any level of understanding about the Vietnam War was to have been there. Many veterans believe it. Jerry discovers there are different levels of understanding. He finds himself dealing with some of those Vietnam veteran issues in his own life and having to make difficult decisions in the face of life threatening pressures.
The story also addresses the timely subjects of elder abuse and theft of an elderly person’s estate by family members. Family battles over such issues are all too prevalent in today’s world. The results from this chaotic and compelling case-juggling story changes lives, especially Jerry’s.
Luck has woven a multi-dimensional plot utilizing characters worthy of cheer and some deserving of scorn. That approach always makes for a fun read. The book cover design has been released by PublishAmerica and may be seen along with book excerpts and pre-publish book reviews on his website at www.ericluck.net.

Offering an unusual presentation of Vietnam veterans, “Most Fortunate Son” shows two veterans who have each made successful lives after enduring the difficulties of the Vietnam War. “The veterans I know moved on after their service to make successful lives. Some are enormously successful by any measure,” says Luck. “I grow weary with the generally presented view of Vietnam vets as only burnouts and psychos. That view is simply untrue. It was a difficult time with enormous tests for all involved.”
