| September 30, 2009 Roman Polanski I have tried to ignore this story. I do not even want to know that situations like this one and the Elizabeth Smart story and the Jaycee Lee Dugard case even exist, but they do. There is evil in this world. It is unimaginable that anyone would think that the rape of a thirteen year old child is ever excusable. Nothing should excuse such an action by an adult...not artistic talent, not past tragedy in their own life...nothing. There is no excuse for raping a young girl. Roman Polanski pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with a minor. Believing that the judge in the case would ultimately throw out his favorable, negotiated sentence, Polanski chose to flee the country in 1978 rather than face more than his previously served 42 days in jail. He has avoided justice for over 30 years. Now he is a 76 year old man...still guilty of his crimes. As much as I did not want to, I read the transcript of the testimony of Polanski's victim. You can read it too. If you have any inclination that his prosecution should not be pursued, then you should read what the girl said to the grand jury. It is agonizing. It does not matter to me that she now voices opposition to his further prosecution. While it is understandable that she might not want to relive that episode of her life, it is not her choice. If you don't think you can stand the actual testimony, Steve Lopez sets out some of the most applicable details in his piece in the LA Times. Look, there is no light reading there either. Polanski gave her liquor and manipulated the situation to allow him to have sex with a thirteen year old girl. HE PLEADED GUILTY. He even told the judge that he did know that the girl was only thirteen years old. Then he fled the country before sentencing. Polanski will get his. Maybe I won't ever see it, but it will happen. That he is a criminal is impossible to dispute. But some in the Hollywood community has decided that Polanski should be forgiven and not be prosecuted. I have read quotes such as, "...he has led an artistic life filled with tragedy", and that it has "been to long for him to be prosecuted now." Seriously? He escaped and avoided prosecution for over thirty years, so he is less guilty now? I simply do not understand. Now comes a petition calling for Polanski to be set free. It is driven by some really heavyweight names from the entertainment field...Harvey Weinstein, Debra Winger, Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, David Lynch...the pathetic list goes on. No matter what their relationship with Polanski, any support of him on this case is simply a way to say that you believe that some people in this world are above the law. They are saying that there is some reason why his criminal behavior should be excused. Taking such a position is absolute evidence of a complete lack of morality and of personal ethics. That man and any other man who does what he has done should pay the price for his crimes. |
