There is not nearly enough cynicism available on the www these days.  I have pounced onto the information superhighway, albeit a
little late to the party.  With so many ahead of me who have actual talent, I intend to stay behind the leaders and draft.
That puts me in the slipstream and I am not so much here to protect.  I am here to serve, baby.

We have had woefully little rain in Steamboat Springs this summer. The skies have provided outstanding drama in the evenings
but with little precipitation to show for it.

It is Friday night and you are sitting around wondering if you should actually get the laundry started or go
out for a beer. No doubt you have not had nearly enough instability in your life this week. We can fix that.

Undoubtedly, you were also wondering if the video "Thriller" by Michael Jackson had ever been
re-enacted by jailbirds in a Phillipine prison. Honestly...where else would they still be aware of Thriller or
of MJ?

Yep...in a prison in the Phillipines.

You are in luck. We have the answer. Enjoy the following video before you get the laundry started.

Click on the blue link below and turn up the sound.

IT IS NOT PORN!!!

STOP IT.

Phillipine Jailbirds do "Thriller"

Our niece has been with us this week.  She is a joy.
And she is thirteen years old.
You have seen photos of this niece here before.

I grew up with one brother in the house living with me.
My Mom was not a teenager...ever. Oh I am quite sure.
Those pictures that I have shown you here of her are simply a trick.
As an adult, I lived with one son in the house.
By then, my wife was no longer a teenager.
There were no teenage girls present in my business career.
I did see them around the house when my son became a teenager.
However, I was prevented from much understanding by his desire
that I make myself scarce...at all times.
This still applies and seems to be getting worse. Yes, he is 24 now.

My experience with teenage girls is pretty much limited to a time when I, too, was a teenager.  I still fear them.
My awareness of the nuances of life was limited, at best, during that time.  After all, I was a teenager.  I am sooooo much better
now.  I spent most of my time thinking up how to torture my brother or annoy my parents. It was my job. Accordingly, most things
regarding teenage girls that I see and hear now are not only new, but quite fascinating to me.  My current observations are
made without any malice. However, those observations are held to close scrutiny by those around me. I know this. Absolutely
anything I say or ask about is taken as criticism. There is no getting around it.  I tell you this only because I want you to know that
I know. So I will try to stick to the facts and level any actual criticism only at myself, where it properly belongs because, after all, I
am an idiot.

See I have achieved some level of understanding.

One of many great things about our niece is that she is willing to let the conversation go anywhere we would like to take it. She
tells me and my wife that we are mean to each other. Then she gleefully looks forward to the next moment of apparent
meanness between us. Oh, she is clearly aware that we are not mean to each other. But it would be no fun at all to not point out
any perceived foibles involving her aunt and uncle.

While making homemade pretzels one evening, we discussed teenage fashion. One trend that she has latched onto is the
wearing of multiple shirts of varying colors, textures and sizes, all at the same time. Let me add here that she would look
adorable in overalls and dirty sweatsocks on her ears. This girl is in exactly zero need of any fashion item that might make her
look cuter. Back to the shirts. The optimum number appears to be three. Being a practical sort, I asked why you would put on
two really tight shirts and then put over those a baggy, regular old t-shirt which pretty much hides the other two shirts
underneath.

See. Told you I was an idiot.

Or that is how she looked at me anyway. I asked how she knew it was a trend. She offered fashion magazines. I asked for a
picture of an example. None were found. We flipped through every single page of a couple of them.

"These models are all wearing gowns. Besides, they are older than me," she said.

"Do any of the older girls wear multiple, layered gowns?" I asked.

Her look was her reply and it clearly moved me lower on the idiot scale. I had not thought such a move possible. I thought it was
a poignant comment on this silly trend and would perfectly illustrate to her how ridiculous this artificially dictated fashion really
was. Oh, and the Beatles were a silly little band that would never amount to anything until they got decent haircuts. Sweet
sainted mother of Yves St. Laurent...when did I become my dad?

All I can say is, Gentlemen...guard your hearts. Because, regardless of the number of shirts, those hearts will be broken sooner
than you think. Guaranteed.
July 9, 2007                                                                                  Community

Most visitors to Steamboat Springs, Colorado arrive to take advantage of the scenery, the skiing, the river, the fishing or the cool mountain air for a respite from
their everyday lives in another city. That we have a destination resort here is undeniable. But just beyond the resort trappings is a ranching community built along
a river. There is a sense of permanence here that is not often found in Colorado’s resort destinations. Mostly that is because the ranches and the town were here
long before there was a ski area nearby. By “long before”, I mean there is significant history here.

On Sunday, July 8, we joined several hundred friends and neighbors at a ranch about twelve miles West of Steamboat Springs in an enormous tent. There we
celebrated with a Mass and a BBQ, one hundred years of life for the Holy Name Catholic Church in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

Understand that there are a little less than ten thousand residents in this entire county. Any gathering with several hundred people, nearly all of who are residents,
is quite significant. When we first arrived at the ranch on Sunday, I told my wife that the celebration was too big. I immediately did not think that I could capture the
feeling and the fun with my camera so that anyone seeing the photos would understand what a cool place we get to be in. It was a little overwhelming. For a while,
I doubted that I could show these terrific people as I see them. It wasn’t until after the church service that I even went back to the car for my camera.

What I wanted was to take only a few photos that might reflect many of the main reasons that I love this community so much. Here are a few of my photos. You can
see all of my photos on Flickr. The link to my page is at the bottom of this page.  I find myself quite emotionally attached to these pictures. I hope you see even just
a portion of what I feel about this place and these people.

Even if you don’t, I am confident that these will make my friend, Daniel, a little homesick. He will get it. That is reason enough to post them.
