| December 5, 2008 The Gig is Up After almost ten years of multiple trips per year to St. John, USVI, my gig is up. The company for which I have worked all these years has been sold and my services are no longer required. I served for 14 years, but we only met in USVI over the last ten. I am left supposing how astronauts feel when they return to Earth. Surely they must reflect on what a royal pain in the backside it is to prepare and make the trip to outer space, but it is so special when you get there that you wish it would last longer. So it is in St. John. There are other outer space analogies, but I will spare you. Pick up a copy of “Don’t Stop the Carnival” by Herman Wouk. Then you can enjoy a novel about a mid- life crisis escape to the Caribbean. It will illustrate the torture that it would be to actually live in da islands I have been many places in my life. Some of them, I knew I would never return to see again. My time in those places could be a celebration of that special time in a wonderful place. Up until now, each trip to USVI was another trip there with another to follow sometime soon. This time I was aware it would be my last…maybe ever. It is a beautiful and exotic place. I will miss going there. |

| December 9, 2008 Photojournalism Career Ends ...before it even began. In the lower left of this astonishingly bad photo is Timmy, the celebrity tree-lighter at Children's Hospital and Miss Texas. Timmy had just flipped the switch and lit the joint up with a megawatt smile. TV cameras even interviewed him about his experience. That is the photo I should have taken. But when the ceremony evolved, I was away from the scene chatting up the attractive ladies in the smoothest of manners. Life is short and we all must set our own priorities. Accordingly, I was in the wrong place with the wrong lens at just the right time so you get to see this. The emcee was a local radio personality and the gentleman in red, you may recognize as "the man." |
